The editors liked

  • Enthusiast photographers want a camera that works for them
  • That lets them access the most important features quickly and adjust settings effortlessly. The 80D provides a quick route to the most commonly used features and allows a good degree of customisa
  • Competent all-rounder
  • Excellent autofocus in video capture
  • The Canon EOS 80D is fast
  • And if you play with the settings can produce excellent photo and video quality
  • 24Mp Dual Pixel CMOS AF sensor
  • 110 JPEGs or 25 raw file bursts
  • New AF systems
  • Continuous autofocus unparalleled at this level
  • 100% optical finder (finally)
  • Fast performance and significant buffer
  • Decent image quality throughout
  • Vari-angle touchscreen (with speedy live view)
  • Superb focusing in all modes
  • Excellent image quality
  • Wi-Fi and app features actually work
  • Swivelling touchscreen and plenty of controls
  • Excellent 24-megapixel stills
  • Best DSLR autofocusing for movie capture
  • 45-point autofocus system
  • Headphone jack

The editors didn't like

  • The downside to an advanced autofocus system is that it's complex and getting the best from it takes some input from the photographer. In more advanced cameras like the 7D Mark II
  • 5D Mark III and 1DX Mark II
  • Canon has tried to help with the Case Studies
  • Sometimes overexposes high-contrast scenes in JPEG mode
  • No 4K video capture
  • Still image autofocus not the most reliable
  • The automatic white balance isn't very good
  • And it doesn't have a terribly broad set of features
  • No increase in maximum frame rate (but it is 7fps)
  • No 4K video
  • No second SD slot
  • Viewfinder flare from direct light sources
  • Off-centre 1-point AF not always perfect
  • No speed increase over 70D
  • Finish looks plasticky
  • Bigger than a non-DSLR (obviously)
  • Pricey
  • 4K video

  • Good quality 24 Megapixel stills and 1080p movies, Large viewfinder with 100% coverage and on-demand grid lines, Broad and dense 45-point viewfinder AF system, Superb continuous AF during Live View and movies, Fully-articulated touchscreen, Built-in Wifi
  • No 4k video or 1080p above 60p for slow motion, Still photos a little less crisp than those from the D7200, Doesn't have twin memory card slots, No GPS / location logging on smartphone app, No focus peaking, Continue: In depth
  • Canon's EOS 80D is a mid-range DSLR that's equally confident whether shooting through the traditional optical viewfinder or in Live View with the fully-articulated touch-screen. The new 24 Megapixel APS-C sensor may have four more Megapixels over the earl...

  • The camera is accurate in all shooting modes, providing excellent exposures, Canon EFmount supports one of the best collections of lenses you will ever find, 24.2Megapixel CMOS imaging sensor provides loads of detail and a very high quality image, DualPix
  • Does not allow video shooting at any time, the camera must be set to capture video, Higher ISO settings show very high levels of noise and low detail, Custom controls are limited compared to higher level cameras, No 4K video capture, which is becoming mor
  • First off, Canon has updated the image sensor on the 80D with an all new 24.2-megapixel, APS-C CMOS image sensor. This offers an additional 4-megapixels of resolution over its predecessor, and they've mated it to their proven DIGIC 6 processor. The inclus...

  • Very good image quality; Better RAW high ISO performance than predecessor; Improved buffer depth; Very fast AF; Dual Pixel CMOS AF is excellent; f/8 AF support; 1080/60p video; Headphone jack; Very good battery life,
  • New kit lens isn't very sharp; No 4K video; No clean HDMI out; 29:59 minute video recording limit; Phase detect AF not as sensitive in low-light as expected (Dual Pixel AF is better in low-light),

  • The Canon EOS 80D is fast, and if you play with the settings can produce excellent photo and video quality
  • The automatic white balance isn't very good, and it doesn't have a terribly broad set of features
  • With better performance and photo quality than the 70D, the Canon EOS 80D is worth the upgrade, but it's got a lot of competition for the money...

  • This is a Canon, so still photos are fine, both JPEG and RAW and high ISO performance is outstanding. It is the video that is a revelation. Simply touch the critical feature of the subject on the touch screen and the camera will track that spot flawlessly
  • Simple vertical tilting screens work better than fully articulated
  • The super fast focus makes this camera a joy to use. It is so responsive it feels almost thought-controlled. The new lens works so well with the body that it is an almost indispensable part of the combination. If video is not a priority then the EOS 70D i...
