  • Behind the bells and whistles the Canon 500D remains a consumer-level SLR. It’s compatible with Canon’s EF and EF-S lenses and EX-series Speedlite flash guns. Not that you’ll need the latter for most shots

The editors didn't like

  • Shockingly expensive
  • Pricy if HD video doesnt appeal
  • Only 1080p HD video recording
  • Slower than the cheaper 40D
  • Noisy dial buttons
  • Lacks external mic socket
  • 1080p limited to 20fps. No external mic input
  • More expensive than Olympus’ and Nikon’s entry level rivals
  • Built-in mic susceptible to picking up wind noise

  • Full HD video doesn't record at full speed.
  • If you’re looking for a cheap and cheerful snapper
  • You should look elsewhere. Starting at £650 with an 18-55mm lens
  • The Canon 500D is far from cheap
  • And to get the most out of it you’ll want to use different lenses

  • Full-HD video-recording feature; fast performance; good image quality; high-resolution LCD.
  • Autofocus points are small and blink briefly; video clips not as smooth at 20fps.
  • The EOS 500D is a very decent dSLR for first-time users and the inclusion of full HD video-recording function sweetens the deal.

  • Wider ISO range, HD video recording, small and lightweight design; fast continuous shooting speed.
  • Slow autofocus in Live View mode; 1080p videos look sluggish at 20fps.
  • Light in terms weight but heavy on features, the Canon 500D is most definitely not your typical entry-level DSLR camera. The inclusion of HD video recording is a welcome addition that comes in handy when pictures alone aren’t enough to convey your e...

  • The entry level DSLR segment is a crowded place right now with every manufacture trying to capture customers at the beginner level. Among the crowd, the Canon 500D is a good camera but it fails to stand out though the HD video mode is something that m...
