TestSeek's Expert Reviews Summary

The IXUS 85 IS is a camera for beginners or tourists who wish to learn about photography, as it is very simply designed and easy to use. It doesn’t have too many external dials, except for a shutter and a directional navigator.

It has Optical image stabilization, a 10 megapixel resolution and an ultracompact design. In addition it consists of a 3x zooming lens, an AF frame setting, face recognition software, and a red-eye reducing feature.

The camera weighs only 5.3 ounces, and measures 3.4 x 2.1 x 0.8 inches, making it extremely handy to carry around in your pocket.

The IXUS 85 IS has a 10MP sensor that is connected to a 35 x 105mm lens. It includes a DIGIC III processor which helps in image stabilisation, as well as a wide array of My-Colours options to enable a functional colour combination approach.

The images taken are quite sharp, though the editors found that the edges might sometimes smudge a little. The flash is balanced and noise levels are very low.

The editors liked

  • Easy to handle
  • Good picture quality and resolution
  • Compact build and easy to hold
  • Optical image stabilization
  • Works well even with low lighting
  • Impressive colour schemes and simple manual dials.

The editors didn't like

  • LCD display is very small
  • Image Blowouts
  • Performance can get slow with certain shots
  • Corners of images can get smudged.

TestSeek's Conclusion

Overall, the reviewers were all of the opinion that the Canon Powershot IXUS 85 IS is a sleek, compact and easy to handle camera, and can be very useful for beginners, giving a decent picture quality as well.

  • The casing and controls on the 10-megapixel Canon IXUS 85 IS have barely changed from the earliest 3-megapixel IXUS, which may sound lazy but we feel it's a very good idea. The flat finish of the sturdy casing makes it easy to hold securely and it's as ea...

  • Abstract:  The 85 IS fits right into Canon's IXUS range with it compact size and striking features. Superficially the button and lens design have been improved since the IXUS 80. The IXUS 85 packs in 2 megapixels more into an almost identical body size and offe...

  • Staying true to the IXUS brand, the IXUS 85IS is a commendable well built and performing compact digital camera. It is very simple to use, light weight (Whilst still feeling very well built) and a fast performer with autofocus taking around ½ second ev...

  • Abstract:  The last time we had a round-up of pocket digital cameras, just over a year ago, Canons IXUS 70 romped home, priced at a similar level to this one. The smallest of the snappers on test here, this years new sibling is just as impressive, keeping the ...

  • Elegant and reliable; fine images and films; very approachable
  • Slightly pricey; doesn't boast the latest spec
  • Canon continues its habit of creating well-made cameras with a select few features on board. There's nothing earth-shattering on offer here -- just a solid, simple camera that takes lovely, stabilised pictures and movies. It's all the better for it ...

  • Lightweight, easy to use, great screen
  • Design a little bland, tingeing around highlights, corner blurring
  • The Canon IXUS 85 is a good little camera, but for some, the price premium might not justify the return over the 8MP offering of the IXUS 80

  • Abstract:  Canons Digital Ixus 85 IS isnt as expensive or as feature-packed as the 970 IS, but its smaller body is more appealing. The optical viewfinder will please long-sighted people who struggle with LCD screens, although the view through it is small. Co...
