The editors liked

  • Detail-rich images at low ISO Fast AF Responsive touchscreen Loads of features Accessory port (for viewfinder)
  • Classic design and brushed metal finish
  • Fresh inclusion of built-in flash
  • Art Filters digital effects applicable in both stills and video modes
  • Metal construction
  • Fast and responsive
  • Fun and dramatic effects filters
  • Full HD video recording
  • Intuitive
  • Easy to use
  • Very fast autofocus in good light
  • 1080i HD video mode with stereo sound
  • Noise kept in check up to 3200 ISO
  • Highquality OLED screen
  • Highquality build and finish
  • OLED touchscreen
  • Fast autofocus
  • Wireless flash control
  • Quality images
  • Out of all the things we like the most about the Olympus PEN EP-3
  • The design and build quality stand out at the top of the list. It's a stunning little camera
  • With a cool retro feel and the ability to switch lenses whenever you need. Quality is high
  • With the use of aluminium throughout the body. It feels great
  • And it's also robust. The display on the back of the PEN EP-3 gets OLED technology
  • Nice design and solid metal build
  • OLED touchscreen control is a real time saver
  • Easy to use features (both auto manual)
  • Fun effects filters
  • Great image quality
  • Enthusiast-level shooting features
  • Solid build quality and stylish design

The editors didn't like

  • Poor images at ISO 6400 and above AF tracking can't keep up with fast movement No viewfinder built-in
  • A costly option in terms of a compact system camera
  • And not the most 'compact' option either
  • More expensive than a digital SLR
  • Too bulky for a pocket
  • Autofocus slows down in low light with the 1442 mm f/3.55.6 kit lens
  • No swivel or tilt screen / No builtin electronic viewfinder
  • No settings (shutter speed
  • Aperture) available in video mode and rolling shutter issues
  • Disappointing 3 fps burst mode
  • Battery life could be better
  • Expensive
  • Subject tracking ineffective
  • Too few shots per charge
  • The Olympus PEN EP-3 is a great little camera
  • But it's also expensive. You'll be able to get a decent DSLR for the same price
  • So you'll really have to want the more compact design. The lack of viewfinder will also put serious photographers off.
  • Expensive if you need to factor in a better lens
  • Too bulky to carry in a pocket
  • Olympus faces regulatory probes that may not bode well for the company
  • Zoom ring a bit hard to reach
  • AWB can be fooled under artificial light
  • Very expensive

  • Quality: a great useable camera that can easily stand in for an upper level DSLR.Why you'd buy the PEN: you want a compact, high quality, interchangeable lens camera. Why you wouldn't: you need more picture control; you dislike changing cards in the camera...

  • The Olympus E-P3 is a remarkable camera that snaps quality photos, even in difficult lighting conditions. I like the build quality, and the attention to details that Olympus has put into it. Its design will surely catch the attention of classic camera ent...

  • Stylish retro pedigree, 1080i60 HD video, Hugely customisable, PASM modes for video
  • Screen hard to see in bright light, Touch screen can freeze conrols, Art filters slow video frame rate
  • Olympus E-P3 verdict You get a different view of a camera having spent ten days with it in the absence of any other distractions, so this isn't the usual Cameralabs verdict assessing features and specifications and including comparisons with competi...

  • Without a doubt, this is one of the most fun cameras we've used on a daily basis. There isn't a high learning curve and what you see on its screen is usually what the camera records. It has extensive colour adjustments, Art filters and scene modes. Ba...

  • BeautifulLoads of buttons and dialsStellar autofocus system
  • PriceyNo dedicated ISO wheelPoor low-light performance
  • The E-P3 doesn't innovate enough from an image quality standpoint to justify an upgrade, and for newcomers, that $900 price point is awfully hard to swallow....

  • Abstract:  Are you looking for a digital camera that does a better job of taking pictures than your smartphone or point-and-shoot camera? When you’re a blogger looking to step up, it’s probably a good idea to get a digital SLR camera. But maybe there’s another wa...

  • Interestingly, the argument for/against the E-P3, now that were have a Micro Four Thirds 'CSC' camera in its third iteration, is not whether it's good enough to completely replace a DSLR - as with its predecessors we'd argue image quality falls slight...

  • Abstract:  New sensor, same sensor, or modified sensor…those were frequent questions in the run-up prior to Olympus launching their new PEN models, and specifically the Olympus E-P3. The consensus has largely been a modified version of the sensor found in previou...

  • Builtin flash (finally), fast autofocus, OLED screen, manual movie and CAF features
  • Poor subject tracking, a little expensive, no standard microphone port, poor battery life
  • The E-P3 is an impressive Micro Four Thirds camera. It's well built, looks the part and takes great pictures to high ISO settings too. The inclusion of a new built-in flash and AF illuminator finally lays to rest the complaints of previous models. Furt...
