Abstract: The Sony SLT A57 DSLR is a tidy still snapper with its 16.1 megapixel sensor, but it also pulls double duty as an HD camcorder: it can suck down full HD 1080p resolution video. But is it a jack of all trades and master of none? Check out our group test...

In spite of a few handling quirks and an ageing menu system that could do with ironing out, the Sony Alpha a57 delivers an overall very favourable impression. With a strong feature set and the ability to deliver high quality images, this camera can certa...

Sequential display EVF can lead to rainbow effects, Certain plastics could feel more robust, Battery runs down more quickly than in 'genuine' SLR cameras, 1855 mm kit lens is of variable quality
The Sony Alpha 57 is a pleasant-to-use camera that's easy to get the hang of while still being advanced enough to take more experienced users further. Picture quality is excellent, so long as the lens you're using is up to scratch, but the sequential d...

A little pricey
The Sony Alpha SLT-A57 really delivers when paired with the 18-55mm kit lens. With bright, vibrant colours, plenty of fine detail and super-fast underlying hardware, it's easy to get great shots in practically any condition....
It is a year and a half since the Sony Alpha 55 hit the market, and the Sony Alpha 57 is more of a refresh than a new model. However, there are enough features to separate it from the entry-level Alpha 35, particularly the angled LCD screen, improved EVF...

Saves you a bundle on software. Prolevel functionality at rookie prices. Higher frame rate than all but the topshelf HDSLR cameras
The bells and whistles come at the expense of image quality; lowlight, highspeed, and digitally zoomed photos will be noisy. If you ever upgrade to a fullframe HDSLR, it likely won't be a Sony, so you'll need all new lenses
