The editors didn't like

  • Jumbled menu system
  • Autofocus no longer on par with other CSCs
  • Touchscreen takes a back seat
  • Unlabelled soft keys
  • Inelegant front-heavy appearance with kit lens
  • More of a consolidation than a leap on from its predecessor
  • Menus would benefit from finer subdivisions
  • No built-in flash
  • Highgloss LCD prone to glare in bright sunlight / Tilt rather than full swivel screen
  • No builtin flash (separate flash accessory supplied)
  • No builtin stabilisation
  • 1855 mm kit lens could be better / Limited choice of lenses unless you buy an adapter ring
  • Noisy shutter release (not exactly discreet!)
  • Slow to focus in low light
  • No mode dial
  • Not exactly pocketsized
  • Lack of physical buttons
  • In-camera menu is still a little clunky

  • The NEX-5N is a significant update to the NEX-5 in terms of both usability as well as customizability. The added connectivity with the new optional OLED EVF accessory should help to make this camera more appealing to enthusiast users who prefer shooti...

  • Many touchscreen control options, Amazingly fast 10fps drive mode, Superb highISO quality with special modes
  • Heavily menudriven navigation is tedious, 16:9 LCD; display area for still is a bit small, Optional EVF is pricy ($400)
  • While it resembles a point-and-shoot digicam, the NEX-5N is a high-performance camera with great speed, versatility and image quality. Experienced shooters may find the menu-based operating sequences tedious, but the new touch-control options make up f...

  • The review camera had obviously 'been round the block a couple of times ' before it landed on Photo Review's desk. The supplied lens showed some dents on the ribbing of the zoom ring; the front element of the lens was fingermarked and there was dust in th...

  • The quality of images from the new sensor is consistently superb. Our testing excursion was on a sunny afternoon when the light was less than ideal, with bright highlights and dark shadows. The Sony took it in its stride, preserving astonishing detail at
  • Barrel and pincushion distortion at the focal length extremes is bad enough to be disturbing, particularly when taking photos of buildings. The optional optical viewfinder is essential for bright sunlight
  • Virtually everything in the preceding summary of features and performance is the same as for the NEX-C3. So what do you get for the extra $200? The option of an electronic viewfinder is an added feature, as is in-camera correction for the aforementioned l...

  • Compact and stylish design, but can be overwhelmed by larger lenses. Nicest screen in its class
  • Same confusing menu system for beginners. Clicking noise during video recording
  • The Sony NEX-5N offers great image quality, a large SLR-sized sensor and a stylish body with the added bonus of a touchscreen....

  • Abstract:  Sony may not have been first to the compact system camera party, but its NEX range of swappable lens snappers is mightily impressive – and that's a trend that continues with new model the NEX-5N.This camera is pretty much the ‘NEX-5 Redux', looking exactl...

  • Excellent image quality; superior noise performance; useful tilting screen; handy button and touchscreen user interface.
  • In-camera menu interface could be more intuitive; can be bulky when paired with the 18-55mm kit lens.
  • The NEX-5N offers more shooting flexibility with some internal upgrades while providing excellent image quality with superior low-light performance. ...
