The editors liked

  • The Ultimaker 2 3D printer has a great compact design
  • Uses standard consumables
  • And works very quietly. It has a large print platform
  • And the print plate is removable
  • Small footprint
  • High quality 20 micro prints
  • Fantastic Cura software
  • Ready to use straight from the box
  • SD card model loading
  • High maximum resolution
  • Excellent build quality
  • Easy to maintain and repair

The editors didn't like

  • The printer performs inconsistently when printing large objects
  • Can't print directly from a computer
  • And requires manual calibration. It's also very expensive
  • Limited filament compatibility
  • Hit and miss with fast print speeds
  • No heated bed
  • Only designed to print PLA and ABS
  • Care needs to be taken that filament doesn't catch at the back
  • Not designed for tethered printing
  • Expensive
  • Struggles with certain fine details
