The editors liked

  • It's impossible not to love the removable cover plates. They're a very basic means of customising the standard New Nintendo 3DS model but they're bound to appeal to hardcore collectors
  • As well as the devoted and lifelong followers of the Japanese veteran
  • Almost every change Nintendo has made here is welcome
  • And the result is a handheld that finally feels complete. The 3D is now much more consistent
  • Meaning less headaches and a more enjoyable experience
  • While the C-stick gives us what we've been asking
  • The New 3DS' facial tracking makes for a hugely improved 3D gaming experience. Its new analog stick is appreciated and the clip-on covers add a lot of style
  • New 3D is vastly better
  • Second analogue nub is long overdue
  • Still relatively affordable
  • Improved 3D screen
  • Changeable faceplates
  • Massive library of amazing games
  • Improved processing power
  • Head tracking gives better 3D experience
  • Interchangeable face plates for customisation
  • Super Stable 3D really works
  • Symmetry of design
  • Built in NFC and faster CPU for future proof gaming

The editors didn't like

  • Battery life has always been something of an issue with the entire 3DS range
  • Especially if you like playing with the auto-stereoscopic effect switched on. While both models of the New Nintendo 3DS offer a slight increase in stamina over their respective
  • There are a few niggles
  • Having to remove the back with a screwdriver to change the microSD in 2015 seems crazy
  • The camera is still quite poor
  • And the name might cause some confusion for those less familiar with the Nintendo family
  • The new C Stick has poor feel though
  • And I can't help wishing for a more significant boost to battery life
  • Battery hasn't really improved
  • Processor bump divides old 3DS owners from new
  • Battery life is still disappointing
  • No "exclusive" games available at the moment
  • Battery life is still poor
  • No charger supplied
  • SD Card only access by unscrewing
  • No US release for nonXL version
  • Naming continues to confuse

  • 3D screen works better, is more enjoyable to use, Secondary analog pad offers richer control options, Upgraded processor does everything faster
  • Some games work differently on the last-gen 3DSes, Customizable plates only offered on the smaller New 3DS, Buying games and apps is still a chore
  • Both of the new 3DSes bring enough improvements to warrant an upgrade from the original system. Nintendo has finally managed to make the 3D effect work comfortably, and hardware looks more refined on both models. If you already own a 3DS, an upgrade in 2...

  • Nintendo's New 3DS isn't much improved overall, but that new display alone almost makes the purchase worthwhile -- or will do, once it's available outside of Japan....

  • 3D effect is vastly improved, Much faster performance, Swappable faceplates are cool, New control additions mostly work well
  • Screen tech still outdated in other ways, Improved cameras remain unusably bad, C-stick doesn't work for all types of games, XL model omits faceplates
  • More times than not, the Verge score is based on the average of the subscores below. However, since this is a non-weighted average, we reserve the right to tweak the overall score if we feel it doesn't reflect our overall assessment and price of the produ...

  • All of the excellent features of the New Nintendo 3DS XL (except with smaller screens), Interchangeable faceplates add customization options
  • Same price as larger 3DS XL, Fewer choices for case colors and designs, Still difficult to find in North America
  • The New Nintendo 3DS gaming handheld packs a top-notch gaming experience into a slightly smaller, more customizable package than the New 3DS XL...

  • The speakers are put out a richer, louder sound-I can actually hear the 3DS if the TV is on, The new home, start and select buttons feel so much better. They're not mushy anymore, and are easier to reach from the 3DS' face buttons, Everything loads way,
  • Why is the power button on the front edge? I'm always worried it's going to turn off in my pocket. It hasn't yet, but just you wait, Why is the stylus on the front? In the old model, it used to lay on the right-side, making it easier to pull out when you
  • Yes. If you dont already have a 3DS and you want one, this is the one you want. If you have an older 3DS, you should still buy one-just not right away. This New 3DS is better in almost every way, but your current handheld plays all the same games, has al...
