The editors didn't like
Probably the saddest thing about Echo is that it's made by Amazon
And I don't mean that smugly. Amazon makes great products
But the company doesn't have access to my calendar and my Google account built right in. Everything Echo does is amazing
But it
Caters to Prime
Lackluster sound quality
Echo app needs work
Speaker quality isn't great
Must be connected to mains
Voice works better with US accents
Needs more smart home connections
Only middling as a speaker
Lots of clonky apps
Echo Dot is better value
The Echo's sound quality is uneven at times
With weak bass at high volumes. The growing list of "Skills" in the Alexa app could also benefit from better organization
App isn't that well designed
No battery for portability
Not class-leading speaker quality
Echo Dot makes more sense
You'll want Prime to make the most of it
No real usefulness
Audio quality is average
Sound quality isn't great
No physical volume control ring
Software is occasionally buggy
Works best with an Amazon Prime membership
Occasionally mixes up words
No hands-free calls
Texts or emails
Somewhat creepy
Can't always answer the question
Alwayslistening object in your house
Doesn't support multiple user calendars or personal information
Only one Spotify or Amazon music account can be linked at any one time
Multi-user support lacking
Limited inital skillset
Occasionally struggles to detect 'wake word' at high volumes
Poor sound compared to speakers in price range
Must remain connected to the mains
Limited choice of music streaming services
Limited Prime account integration
Very average sound quality
Wake word limited to 'Alexa' and 'Amazon'
Security limited to four-digit PIN
Sometimes Alexa mishears and can't answer challenging questions

I'm very torn by the Echo. On one hand the hardware is very well designed and solid blending into the background very effectively with a good if not great speaker system. The software is so nearly good. When an interaction goes well it goes very well – us...

Abstract: It's 18 months since the Amazon Echo launched in the US, adding a wireless Bluetooth speaker to Amazon's increasingly disparate spread of products and services - and now it's coming to the UK (and Europe) . And a lot has happened in that time, from updat...
