The editors liked

  • Slick OS
  • GPS functionality
  • Fantastic display
  • Nutzo battery life. The Gear S's 300 mAh battery isn't even big by smartwatch standards and still I was able to get a whole two days out of it in one stretch
  • And on the night in-between I was even using it for sleep tracking. This should be the baseline
  • The Samsung Gear S has a big
  • Bright curved display
  • Decent battery life
  • Comes with its own bonus battery pack and can stay connected away from a phone with its own 3G data or Wi-Fi. It's attractive
  • Albeit rather large. It's a complete on-wrist phone
  • Fantastic curved Super AMOLED display
  • Battery cradle also charges
  • Notifications work well
  • Plenty of apps available on Tizen
  • Big
  • Bright screen
  • Improved app support
  • Good S Health integration

The editors didn't like

  • Too big
  • Strap is unwieldy
  • Worries about battery life
  • Ugh
  • It's so big and ugly and unhip. It's vitally important to be able to wear a smartwatch without being uncomfortable
  • Physically or mentally. Wearing the Gear S made me uncomfortable in both ways. When I wore it for sleep tracking
  • It kept feeling like
  • It still requires a recent Samsung phone to pair with and install apps
  • And its standalone features don't work with all apps and notifications. The Gear app library is still weak compared with Android Wear
  • It's ridiculously expensive
  • Samsung Galaxy phone reliance
  • Samsung Health features are poor
  • Clasp is ugly and hard to use
  • Slightly laggy performance
  • Apps still need to be downloaded on phone

  • The wildly ambitious Samsung Gear S smartwatch doubles as a full standalone smartphone, but the software and apps available don't let it do as much as you'd expect....

  • Abstract:  Need a watch? And a phone? How about if the two are merged? Samsung is revisiting the idea of a converged gadget, and is even going to bring it to Australia, as we find out in a hands-on with the Gear S.Smartwatches are all the rage at the moment, but the...

  • Slick OS, GPS functionality, Fantastic display
  • Too big, Strap is unwieldy, Worries about battery life
  • The Samsung Gear S feels like a device that yet again is something of a litmus test for Samsung. No one really knows what people want from a smartwatch yet, so Samsung has seemingly decided to shove everything into this one. Because of this it is a chunk...

  • Abstract:  The smartwatch is the coolest accessory of 2014. You're not somebody if you don't have a shiny screen hanging off your wrist and flashing notifications from your Samsung's latest attempt at making its own bespoke smartwatch is an interesting one.For one...

  • There's a lot to like with the Gear S. Having a phone on your wrist is dead handy. Especially if like me, you often leave your phone at home or the office.  As you'd expect, some compromises are inevitable. It is amazing that Samsung have crammed an entire...
