We’ve always had a soft spot for Sony’s design - that obsession with black plastic and solid straight lines that somehow has come to embody design from the Japanese gadget giant. And while last year’s flagship Xperia S was just a bit too thick to compete
There’s no such problem here
This slick slab is just 7.9mm deep. Its large size isn’t for everyone - iPhone owners especially will struggle to

Section of this review
The viewing angle isn't as high as other smartphones but that in no way means it suffers from a poor viewing angle. Even the uncomfortable width and thickness of the handset is not something which would deter me from owning one
A
Poor battery
Not a lot of storage space for the high price tag
Disappointing battery life
Hefty dustloving body won’t suit everyone
Sony bloatware
Disappointing Socialife app.
Display
Low contrast
Finger smudging.
Photo quality less than the best
Speaker location

Mediocre battery life

The size will defeat some smaller hands and the waterproof socket covers are necessary but fiddly
Port flaps can be annoying

Camera images are heavily processed
Gets hot with HD movies and 3D games
Screen is a bit disappointing when compared to other screens
No dedicated camera button
Waterproof flaps can be a pain at times
Below average battery life in use
Bulky dustlovin’ design isn’t for everyone
Sony bloatware and halfbaked Socialife app
The Sony Xperia Z's battery life is short
Its camera is slow
And its processor is not as peppy as those found in other flagship phones. Its glossy chassis attracts fingerprints easily
Camera performance is average
Might be too big for some
Non removable battery
Software bugs
Fair warning
While we like it
You might hate the design. If you prefer the sleek curves of the HTC One X’ chassis
The boxy look of the Xperia Z may be the very opposite of what you’re after. The waterproof doors also add some unnecessary clutter
If you don’t think you’re likely to take your phone swimming anytime soon
You might hate the extra fuss of having to prise open a flap every time you

There's a whole lot to like about the Xperia Z; it's easily the best phone that Sony's offered… probably ever. The battery life bugs me personally no end, but those who want high power but don't have message urgency may be able to overlook that, and the e...
Something I didn't expect with the Xperia Z was to fall in love with it - upon opening it out of the box, I was in love. It looks gorgeous, performs admirably, and does it all without breaking a sweat. Have Sony gone from underdog to a true competitor...

Buying Guide Best Android phone Sony's come out here with a very strong message: we are back and we mean business. There's no hint of this being a niche Android phone, or by any means a cheap one. Sony wants the Xperia Z to be viewed as the handset of cho...

Lacklusture viewing angles, Poor quality loudspeaker, Camera app slow to open
Boasting a 5in, full HD 1080p display, excellent performance, good battery life and water and dust-resistance, the glass-clad Xperia Z is easily the best smartphone Sony has ever produced. It's only let down by a poor quality loudspeaker and a screen that...
Based on what we've seen so far, the Xperia Z looks like a very solid Android phone, and we expect it to do moderately well in Australia, and certainly better than Sony has done with previous models in the local market. This looks to be a high-end model ...
