Sony's Xperia Z was quite a looker
But its plastic body left us wanting something a bit more robust. This time around
Sony's upped the build quality with a solid aluminium and glass design that's reminiscent of the iPhone 4. The Z1 is still extremely slim
At just 8.5mm thick. It's also fairly weighty at 169g

There's not a lot to fault the Z1 on. It's a top-notch piece of kit with a premium feel that screams quality. The one caveat
However
Is its camera. Sony has armed the Z1 with a 20.7-megapixel shooter

The Xperia Z1 offers the best photography experience of any Sony smartphone, but it's not quite good enough to topple our current favourite device, the Nokia Lumia 1020. The Xperia Z1 brings together a lot of Sony's latest camera technologies in a premiu...

Good overall exposure, Excellent detail preservation outdoors (better than other 8Mpix cameras), Low noise level in all situations. Noise is not unpleasant (no chroma component) with a very small grain size, Good autofocus: fast and precise in most situat
Slight color shading occasionally noticeable, Excessive exposure time under 20 lux (beneath 1/10s where rivals stop at 1/15s), and possible source of motion blur, Strong ringing artifacts, Lowcontrast details smoothed slightly in low light conditions
Abstract: Time to wrap things up - we wondered if maybe we should split the final decision into two, still photography and video recording, but the results came out consistent enough to declare a clear winner. And it is, drum roll please, the Nokia Lumia 1020. ...
If the Xperia Z was Sony's way of assuring us it's still got it , the Xperia Z1 is Sony telling us that it's done catching up and is now gunning for the first place, the position it owned undisputedly for so many years. It takes more than a good smartpho...
