  • The Canon PowerShot SX170 IS delivers a 16x zoom range at a low price, but images are noisy and the camera is a slow performer....

  • Full manual mode, Lithium ion battery, Easy to use
  • No full HD movie recording, Can take a while to focus while zooming, Lack of CMOS sensor
  • If you're looking for a point and shoot capable of a little extra then the SX170 will probably tick all of your boxes and more. Easy to use, good value for money and rugged enough to survive life's knocks and bumps...

  • Sharp lens. 16x zoom range. Good control layout.
  • Images on the noisy side. Slow performance. So-so rear display. Video capture is limited to 720p. No Wi-Fi. Not exactly pocketable

  • The Canon PowerShot SX170 IS is a good choice for budget-conscious buyers who want to do more than point-and-shoot, thanks to its semimanual and manual shooting modes and large, comfortable controls
  • Despite the switch to a rechargeable battery, the SX170 is still pretty bulky and its shooting performance is too slow for fast-moving subjects like kids and pets -- especially indoors
  • If you hate AA batteries, but like inexpensive compacts with manual controls, the 16x zoom Canon PowerShot SX170 IS takes a good photo. Otherwise, seek out its predecessor, the SX160 IS.

  • The new inclusion of rechargeable lithium ion battery rather than bog standard AAs aside, the 16 megapixel Canon PowerShot SX170 IS doesn't appear massively altered from its SX160 IS forebear. So if you like your pocket travel zooms to look a little bit...
