The editors liked

  • Peruvian jungle is the best setting yet
  • Combat is stealth/hunting focused
  • Tons to explore
  • Collect and raid
  • Jungle survival lessons with badass Lara
  • Scenery that's just begging for photo mode
  • A horror movie vibe that amps up the tension and actually adds to the story
  • Biggest game of the reboot trilogy
  • Big open world
  • Devious puzzles
  • Riveting story
  • Superb HDR visuals (in 4K on Xbox One X and PS4 Pro)

The editors didn't like

  • Lara still a one-dimensional heroine
  • Still not enough tombs
  • Open world mechanics like crafting and hunting can feel restricted in such a linear game
  • The camera can be pretty unhelpful when you're trying to climb tricky overhangs
  • Voice acting on Lara can be dreary
  • Takes a while to warm up
  • Sleuthing tactics may not be to all tastes after the previous two games

  • 6. View All PagesOverviewIn my opinion, this update feels like it came far too late. I personally haven't played the game much at all, as I waited for the DXR update to land. Then I waited some more, I waited, I waited still… Then out of the blue, the upd...

  • Shadow of the Tomb Raider is a beautiful game. With its detailed texture and model work, environments really come alive and help create one of gaming's most immersive jungle locations. Significant attention has been paid to Lara herself as she has been tr...

  • Abstract:  Shadow of the Tomb Raider sets out a bold stall. After twenty-two years of pillaging ancient cultures for their artefacts, Lara Croft finally grows a conscience and realises that perhaps tomb raiding isn't the noble endeavour that previous generations bel...

  • We must admit, around an hour or two into Shadow of the Tomb Raider we wondered if it'd end up being the Return of the Jedi of the reboot trilogy – fun, but the weakest of the bunch. We were proved wrong, however. It is a dark game in tone – especially if...

  • Shadow of the Tomb Raider is undoubtedly the biggest, darkest and most enjoyable Tomb Raider game to date. The attention to detail in just about every area of the game is impressive, and the deadly challenge tombs really capture the essence of what Tomb R...

  • Abstract:  Care of a battered hand-me-down disc, Tomb Raider 2 is one of the very first games I remember playing that had something resembling character. Lara Croft was an unstoppable force, smirking in the face of danger and racing forward to the next challenge. She was beautiful and curvaceous, yes, and intelligent too. She was also a millionaire who could afford home gyms and butlers and walk-in freezers - she didn't need the money or the infamy that all these dusty old relics provided. That's why I loved her; she did it all and risked everything just for the thrill of the hunt, and had a damn good time while she did it.

  • Abstract:  There are two things I've always loved about Tomb Raider in all its incarnations over the years: beautiful, exciting and dangerous places to explore, and Lara Croft herself. Shadow of the Tomb Raider nails the former, with sumptuous South American locatio...

  • Peruvian jungle is the best setting yet, Combat is stealth/hunting focused, Tons to explore, collect and raid
  • Lara still a one-dimensional heroine, Still not enough tombs
  • By creating more options for stealth and environmental kills, combat no longer feels like a cover-shooter.While its far from a ground-breaking reinvention of the series, Shadow of the Tomb Raider is still the most ambitious and rewarding entry yet. Readdr...

  • Abstract:  I think that to a large extent, video games have moved away from such practices. If you sit there playing some sort of open world title, you're going to come across stuff that really just happens to be there; things that are irrelevant except for the flav...
