The editors liked

  • Looks superb
  • Plays well – not too complex or too simple
  • The new hexagonal maps and tactical combat
  • Culture is implemented like experience in an RPG
  • That same old Civ addictiveness
  • Amazing graphics
  • Detailed game play and information
  • Clear and clean menus
  • Balanced and improved combat system.

The editors didn't like

  • Irritatingly lengthy startup sequence
  • Can be slow with lots of units on map
  • Might be too complex for some strategy fans
  • Multiplayer isn't going to compete with StarCraft II
  • Civ IV fans may dislike changes to culture and combat
  • Late game turns take a while.

  • First things first, we should indicate that the "Late Game View Benchmark" tests worst-case scenario performance, meaning you are likely to see better overall performance depending on the stage of your game. That said, this is a valid benchmark as any...

  • Abstract:  Let get this straight immediately - if you have ever had an issue stopping yourself from playing an addicting game (“Just 5 more minutes” of Diablo 2, “Just one more round” of Battlefield), then do not start playing Civilization V. I’m pretty sure qui...

  • Interface is superb with everything in close proximity. Game is streamlined for newcomers to the Civilization franchise.
  • Unit pathfinding can be substandard at times.
