We’ve always had a soft spot for Sony’s design - that obsession with black plastic and solid straight lines that somehow has come to embody design from the Japanese gadget giant. And while last year’s flagship Xperia S was just a bit too thick to compete
There’s no such problem here

The viewing angle isn't as high as other smartphones but that in no way means it suffers from a poor viewing angle. Even the uncomfortable width and thickness of the handset is not something which would deter me from owning one

While we like it
You might hate the design. If you prefer the sleek curves of the HTC One X’ chassis
The boxy look of the Xperia Z may be the very opposite of what you’re after. The waterproof doors also add some unnecessary clutter
If you don’t think you’re likely to take your phone swimming anytime soon
You might hate the extra fuss of having to prise open a flap every time you
Sony’s phone feels luxurious, and it’s priced accordingly. SIM-free, the Xperia Z will set you back a mighty £498 inc VAT, which is around £100 more than the Samsung. On contract, the gap closes: both are free on £26-per-month deals. The two phones exce...
Abstract: The Sony Xperia Z has launched in the UK and our sample has just arrived at UKMR HQ. We're really eager to put this smartphone through its paces (having already subjected it to some harsh water and shock treatment) but first, we've shot a quick unboxing v...

Abstract: T he Xperia Z looks both great and bizarre at the same time. The exterior is a slim, black (or white or purple) tablet vaguely resembling Space Odyssey markers, with no physical buttons on its 5 inch screen and measuring 139mm x 71mm.It does help the phon...

Abstract: But did it pass KYM's ‘Living With' test? Find out below. There's a lot to like about this device. Not only does it feature one of the best displays we've ever seen, one powered by Sony's Mobile Bravia Engine 2, but it also looks and feels great in the han...
Fantastic screen, NFC, HDMI (MHL link via microUSB), 'Small apps', Lovely design
Short on internal memory
Sony’s handsets tend to frustrate me more often than they please me, showing glimpses of greatness let down by some annoying issues. The Xperia Z, however, gets so much right that my grumbles seem almost wilful. These boil down to a request for more mem...

The Xperia Z is Sony's best smartphone to date. It takes the ideas the company has been working on over the last few years, and throws them all together in a more refined and polished manner than ever before. It ticks all the right boxes, yet there's some...
Abstract: Sony have been producing some fantastic phones since they took over the Sony Ericsson brand and now just produce Sony smartphones. There have been a few so far in the S, P, U and T which was last years flagship camera phone. Now Sony go a step further...
Display, design, power control options, Sony's UI isn't offensive, waterproof
Camera performance is average, might be too big for some
There's a lot to like about the Sony Xperia Z. It is the strongest Android phone that Sony has produced to date, fusing power, design and features. We don't find Sony's customisations to be too intrusive and the attention to battery life is to be we...
