Rain and pool-proof
Great screen
This is what happens when you do a 'mini' version of a phone right. We've seen lacklustre efforts from the likes of Samsung and HTC with mini versions of their flagship phones before
But Sony has spared no expense while zapping the Z1 with the shrink ray - in fact
Practically every tech spec remains the same in this premium handset. You're still treated to the snappy 2.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm p

Waterproof to 1.5m
The most powerful Android phone of its size
Waterproof and durable
Not enormous like every other topend Android
The editors didn't like
Rectangle design won't be to everyone's taste
No choice on small internal memory
Screen can look slightly washed out
Runs using older Android version
The body of our black model scratched easily
Camera not amazing
A step below other highend phones
Lack of Android 4.4
Sony's UI feels slightly dated
Screen is still only 720p
Camera has processing problems
Bezels are on the big side
Poor bundled services
Awful low light photography
Glass back prone to smudges
Custom UI is not great
Sacrifice screen size for usability
WiFi reception could be better Not yet Android KitKat Lots of Sony bloatware preloaded
Compact
Yes – but not as ergonomic as an iPhone
Camera isn't the best on a phone this size
There's not much to fault the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact on
As somehow
Sony has managed to cram in a ton of top-notch tech into such a small chassis. You could argue that it's a tad thick compared to an iPhone 5s at 9.5mm deep
But that's down to its waterproof aluminium and glass chassis. It won't win any awards for the thinnest phone on the market
But it's still pocketable and it's robust enough
Prone to scratching
Launches on Android 4.3 and software hasn't moved on very far
Little on the chunky side
Subpar lowlight camera performance
No Android KitKat out of the box
There are better smartphone cameras out there
Fingerprint and dust magnet
Big bezels above and below screen
Flaps on ports
No selectable macro mode
Pre-applied ASF
Not latest version of Android
Premium design and features comes with a premium price
For any other 4.3-inch smartphone, we'd call that asking price a pretty steep one. As it is, we'd expect nothing less than premium-level performance from the Z1 Compact, petite package or no. Fortunately for Sony, “premium performance” is exactly what ...
Abstract: The Sony Xperia Z1 and the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact are two phones that have quite a lot in common. They share the same OmniBalance design that's typical for Sony's smartphones, they're both waterproof, and they both pack the hardware specs we've come to...
Abstract: To say that the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact is a remarkable device would be a huge understatement. It is a phone that boldly breaks the status quo among Android high-ends – a phone the very existence of which proves that a top-notch Android device can come...
Best screen on a Sony smartphone to date, Battery is a gift that keeps on giving, Flagship performance in a compact size, Waterproof and built to last
Not as friendly to the palm as curvier phones, Camera is hindered by over-processing of images, Doesn't ship with the latest version of Android, but does include bloatware

Flagship-caliberspecs, Premium build quality, Excellent performance, long battery life, Great camera, Improved display offers better viewing angles than older Sony handsets
More expensive than other "mini" phones, Minor software issues
Sony has set the benchmark for mini-flagships. With strong build quality and robust performance, the Z1 Compact will be a welcome arrival for anyone who prefers smaller devices....
Abstract: Android has improved hugely, but as it evolved every year, the screen size of the top Android devices also increased. We grew from having 4-inch phones to 4.7-inch devices, then 5-inch ones, only to arrive at a landscape of humongous gadgets dominating...

Its small size makes it comfortable to use, it has a searingly powerful processor, a good camera and decent battery life. It looks brilliant too and its waterproof design means you don't need to worry about dropping it in the bath
It's not running the latest version of Android and some of Sony's software tweaks don't really add anything to the experience
With its powerful processor, great camera, decent screen and gorgeous, waterproof design, the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact is the best small Android phone around.

Incredible engineering & design, Best-in-class camera experience, Great HD IPS display, Waterproof
Sony services can be pervasive, A little thick, No IR blaster
Abstract: High-end Android smartphones have been successfully competing with the iPhone for quite some time now, but despite their undeniable popularity, there's one ubiquitous differentiating feature that sticks out like a sore thumb – each and every recent And...
With the Xperia Z1 Compact, Sony has made an important move that will make its smartphone line-up considerably more approachable. The Z1 is a powerful and well-rounded product, but its imposing size meant that there will undoubtedly be a lot of people ...
