Portable design
Runs fullfat Windows 8
Affordable price
Decent screen colours
Good performance for the price
Ignore all the hype about the Microsoft Surface
Asus’ hardware puts it to shame. Typically
Intel-powered tablets are thick
Noisy affairs
But this model’s just 9.7mm thin and at 580g
Pleasantly light too. Though it’s non-descript
It’s a whole lot more portable than Microsoft’s clunky Surface - and that doesn’t even run full Windows 8 like this does.On the sides
You’ll find a micro HDMI port
Full Windows experience
Compact and light
Well-built
Upgradable storage via microSD
Value for money
Windows 8
Decent camera
Good battery life
Accurate picture and sound
Lots of storage capacity
Most of it
Actually. It looks and feels fantastic to the point where you even begin to fall in love with the Windows 8 software
What's not?
Like other Intel Atom chipbased Windows 8 portables we're seeing at the moment
It could do with a bit more unde
Slim design
8 megapixel camera and 2 megapixel camera
Slim body
Reasonable price
Fine screen
Good design and build quality
Runs Windows 8 not Windows RT
Excellent value
Fullblown
32bit Windows 8 can handle desktop and tablet usage scenarios
Easy and comfortable to use
Very good design and build quality
Excellent battery life
Plenty of wireless connectivity

Bluetooth
NFC
GPS
Good price
The editors didn't like
Processor slow
Ports problematic
Could be brighter
Software problems
Lowresolution screen
Plastic casing feels quite cheap
If it’s ease of use you want
Avoid the Asus VivoTab Smart. Yes
You can have more than one app on screen at once
And yes
You can use whatever web browser you like. But it can be daunting for tech newbies
And more than a little fiddly tapping the right icon and moving windows around on a relatively small touchscreen. To get the most out of it you’re better off plugging in a keyboard and mouse
Can be sluggish
Not enough RAM
Windows 8 is confusing here and RT would have been simpler
Screen could be better
Dull design
Can run slowly
Creaky build
Basic keyboard
Like other Intel Atom chipbased Windows 8 portables we're seeing at the moment
It could do with a bit more under the hood
The bottom line
The Asus VivoTab Smart is a genuine contender and well worth your time when looking for an allpurpose tablet. Loo

The Asus VivoTab Smart is a genuine contender and well worth your time when looking for an all-purpose tablet. Look out iPad? Not quite, but it's good....
Full Windows 8, Accurate picture and sound, Lots of storage capacity
Creaky build, Basic keyboard
Light and easy to hold with comfortable curved edges, the VivoTab doesn't match the Microsoft Surface for build quality, but otherwise it offers more storage and the full version of the Windows OS for the same price. Add its excellent music and movie sk...
Fullblown, 32bit Windows 8 can handle desktop and tablet usage scenarios, Easy and comfortable to use, Very good design and build quality, Excellent battery life, Plenty of wireless connectivity: WiFi, Bluetooth, NFC, GPS, Good price,
An easy and fun to use hybrid device that has a good battery life and competitive price tag. Better hardware performance and the VivoTab Smart would be a formidable competitor to high-end tablets and entry-level laptops....
Asus has done a good job with the VivoTab's design, producing a tablet that can compete with any of its Windows, Android or iOS rivals. The dual-interfaces of Windows 8 still feel like a compromise when running on a tablet, but if you do need to run exist...
Value for money, Windows 8, decent camera, good battery life
Screen could be better, dull design, can run slowly
A decent Windows 8 tablet that, despite a lack of processing prowess, still offers a good proposition for business buyers...

Fine screen, Good design and build quality, Runs Windows 8 not Windows RT, Excellent value
Jerky framerates on 3D games, Average battery life
Were you just looking for a tablet and not a convertible netbook-like device, then the VivoTab Smart ME400 has an awful lot going for it. It’s well-designed, nicely balanced, has a great screen and feels fast enough for anything bar serious gaming and m...
Slim design, full Windows 8, 8 megapixel camera and 2 megapixel camera,
Screen not full HD, processor a bit underpowered
Good to see the full version of Windows 8 on a standard tablet, and the better-than-average camera will probably appeal to some. But while it comes in at a reasonable price, the Microsoft Surface RT offers a better screen, more powerful processor and i...
Abstract: Most Windows 8 tablets come with keyboards so that they can also be used as a laptop. The Asus Vivotab Smart ME400 is a little different. Although a matching Bluetooth keyboard that clips onto the bottom edge of the ME400 is available, this costs extra...
